Eagles declaw Jaguars

Ryan King had 21 points and Kevin Persch added 18, with 16 coming in the first half, as Grove City high dispatched Thomas Jefferson 66-51 in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA Boys Basketball Tournament at Slippery Rock University Friday.

The Eagles, the District 10 runner-up, built a 35-22 lead at halftime.

King added nine rebounds, Mike Johnson had 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals, and Jordan Fee had six assists and three steals for the Eagles.

Tommy McCafferty and Billy Arre led the Jaguars with 16 points apiece.

Grove City (21-6) will face Moon, a 75-43 winner over Slippery Rock, Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

J.J. Leffler had 26 points to lead Commodore Perry to the PIAA Class A victory at Meadville High School Friday.

Jake Mechling had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Jesse Morrison had 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Falcons (21-6).

Sean Foust chipped in with 10 points for A-C Valley.

As Jeff Becker and Trevor Gallo found out Friday, the path to the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championship finals runs through Freedom.After picking up quarterfinal victories, Becker and Gallo lost to a pair of Freedom wrestlers in the semifinals at the Giant Center in Hershey.Becker (135 pounds) had pinned John Hoagland of Wilson Area in 3:37 before dropping a 5-3 decision to Damian Rose.Becker then decisioned Steve Fehnel of Schuylkill Valley 3-1 in the consolation semifinals.Gallo (171) pinned Eric Lapotsky of Mount Carmel in 1:11 of the quarterfinal match before being pinned by Kurt Brenner in 2:51.In his consolation semifinal, Gallo lost to Rory McCoy of Hughesville, 8-2.
