Fight Night in Butler
The Butler Cubs boxing program will have seven amateur pugilists fighting on their own turf Saturday night.
The annual Butler Cubs ASA Amateur Boxing Show is slated for 7:30 p.m. in the Cubs Hall. Gates open at 6 p.m. and approximately 10 bouts are scheduled.
“We’ve been doing this for close to 40 years now,” Cubs boxing trainer Don Spinetti said. “We could have a lot more fights on the card, but it’s difficult lining up ages, weight classes and skill level.
“I’ll only put evenly-matched fighters in the ring and we’ve got a lot of those in this show.”
Cubs fighters on the card include Billy Wolfe III (23-6), Lucas Adams (8-12), Donovan Malovich (22-7), Bob Osterider (12-8), Spencer Sneddon (debut), Brad Regis (6-3) and Mike Graham (1-1).
Graham, 32, only took up boxing in December.
“My sister had been coming here for a while,” Graham said. “I tagged along and it looked like something I wanted to give a try.
“Once I started doing the boxing workouts, I wanted to box competitively.”
Both of Graham’s first two amateur bouts have resulted in split decisions.
Malovich, 17, is a Butler High School junior who also wrestles for the Golden Tornado. He does not box during wrestling season.
“I keep the sports separate,” Malovich said.
Since his wrestling season ended, Malovich has been in the Cubs gym four days a week, working out for two hours at a time. He’s been involved in boxing for nine years.
“The guy I’m fighting (Adam Littlejohn of Punxsutawney) is 37,” Malovich said. “He’s old enough to be my father. I’m excited. I’m up for the challenge.
“This guy has a lot more experience than me, a lot more fights. This will probably be the toughest fight I’ve ever had.”
Malovich has not boxed against an opponent since the Cubs show here last May.
Wolfe, 15, won a match last month in Pittsburgh. He has stayed active in the ring — getting ready for his 30th amateur bout — but he treats the home show as something special.
“It’s the biggest fight of the year for me when we host a show,” Wolfe said. “This is the one time of the year when I have a lot of friends and family in the crowd supporting me.
“This is my hometown and I want to put on a good show.”
Wolfe said his dream since he was a small child has been to become a boxing world champion. His father, Bill Wolfe, had a couple of professional fights and helps train boxers in the Cubs program.
Tickets for the show are $12 and will be available at the door. An appearance by female bodybuilder Theresa Ivancik will also be featured.
“The fighters get pumped up for this show because we always have a good crowd,” Spinetti said. “The balcony fills up first because there are no reserved seats. It’s first come, first serve.”
