Alleged drug dealer nabbed

Zaamar Stevenson
New Castle man has many prior arrests

An alleged longtime drug dealer, described by authorities as a “significant player” in trafficking crack cocaine and heroin in and around Butler, was arrested Monday by county narcotics officers.

Zaamar “Scrap” Stevenson’s “take down” in Butler yielded more than 100 baggies of crack, dozens of stamp bags of heroin and more than a thousand dollars in currency, said county Detective Tim Fennell.

The 39-year-old Stevenson of New Castle was the target of a monthlong investigation by the Butler County Drug Task Force. He is being held in the county prison on $100,000 bail.

Fennell, who supervises the task force, is familiar with Stevenson based on prior drug investigations that date back to the early- and mid-2000s.

“We’re old friends,” Fennell quipped.

Investigators believe Stevenson was responsible for selling a large amount of crack and heroin. He was known to use rental cars to make his alleged roving drug deals.

“His arrest takes off the street a door-to-door drug delivery service,” Fennell said. “We’re happy for that.”

The task force zeroed in on Stevenson after getting tips from users and informants, one who claimed to buy heroin and crack from the defendant “almost every day, and sometimes multiple times a day,” according to court documents.

A controlled drug buy Monday that employed an informant culminated the probe. While officers watched nearby, Stevenson from a rental car allegedly sold heroin and crack in the sting that played out between Forcht and Brady streets.

After that arranged buy, authorities said, the vehicle traveled to another suspected unplanned deal just a block away on West Brady Street at Snyder Avenue.

The apparent buyer jumped into the back seat. Moments later, a task force “take-down team” moved in and stopped the vehicle.

Officers arrested Stevenson, who was driving the four-door sedan, and his front-seat passenger, Tarin J. Wise, 22, of Alliance, Ohio.

The would-be buyer in the back seat admitted she had planned to purchase crack from Stevenson.

Officers found a blue grocery-type bag on the front passenger seat. The bag contained 20 individually wrapped 100-dollar baggies and 101 individual 50-dollar baggies of suspected crack.

Additionally, the grocery bag contained 63 bags of suspected heroin.

Fennell estimated the street value of the seized drugs at nearly $8,000.

A search of Stevenson turned up $1,506. Officers found $185 in Wise’s purse.

District Judge Sue Haggerty on Monday night arraigned both defendants on charges of felony drug possession and conspiracy.

Like her alleged accomplice, Wise was placed in the county prison on $100,000 bail following arraignment.

Stevenson’s criminal record, meanwhile, shows 10 drug-related felony convictions in Butler and Lawrence counties between 2000 and 2009.

In his most recent conviction, he was sentenced to serve 3 to 10 years in state prison for selling cocaine in the New Castle area.

Stevenson was on state parole for his conviction in that 2009 case, filed by the state attorney general’s office, when arrested Monday.

Wise apparently has no prior drug dealing arrests.
