Freeport taking on history
This is one in a series of previews of this Friday's high school football gamesALIQUIPPA — Travel to Aliquippa and you take on more than the current crop of Quips. You take on history.Freeport (2-0) will get a taste of that Friday when it heads to The Pit for a 7 p.m. kickoff.“I'm looking forward to stepping on that field, actually,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “I have never been in that stadium before.“There's so much tradition there, so much accomplishment. When you think Western Pa. football, you think Aliquippa.”The Yellowjackets are 0-5 all-time against the Quips, including a 21-3 loss in Freeport last season. But Freeport is off to a good start this year, dispatching Yough (43-6) and Deer Lakes (31-0) by lopsided scores.“They have a well-organized team, a very disciplined team,” Aliquippa coach Mike Zmiljanic said. “John does a great job with those kids.“I fully expect they will come in here, play a solid game, and ... these are not my words ... try to upset us.”Consider the Quips' history and it would be considered an upset.Zmiljanic is 238-35 in 20 years at Aliquippa. The program has been to the WPIAL playoffs 22 consecutive years and has won 16 WPIAL championships.“It's such a rich history,” Gaillot said. “They're not too flashy. They just line up and play. They have really good athletes and Coach Z gets the most out of them.”Aliquippa (3-0) has outscored its opponents — New Castle, Beaver Falls and Beaver — by a combined 90-10 score. Running back Avante McKenzie, a junior, rushed for 1,258 yards and 14 touchdowns last year.He has already scored six touchdowns this season.“He's only 5-foot-6, so he's not getting much college attention rigjht now,” Zmiljanic said. “I imagine he'll wind up playing somewhere.”Zmiljanic said linebacker Tariq Jones has been a standout on defense and his offensive line has been a key to the Quips' offensive production.“Those guys have been playing well as a unit,” he said.Freeport quarterback Austin Romanchak has rushed for 277 yards and four touchdowns, thrown for 113 and another touchdown. Conor Selinger has 155 yards rushing and two TDs.“Jake Sarver caught a touchdown pass and kicked a 33-yard field goal,” Gaillot said. “We're spreading the ball around and getting more people involved.”Austin Kemp and Patrick Keeley lead the Freeport defense with 22 and 21 tackles, respectively.“Wed have to pick an area of their offense and try to shut that down,” Gaillot said. “We need to take care of the ball and avoid turnovers.“I'll enioy the experience Friday night. Our kids will play as hard as they can. Nothing really phases them and they won't be intimidated by the atmosphere. I expect us to play a solid football game.”
