Boyers woman who allegedly hit deer charged with fraud

A vehicle accident with a deer has led to criminal insurance fraud charges for a Boyers woman.

Jenna R. Samulewski, 27, was charged, arraigned and released on her own recognizance Monday for felony counts of insurance fraud and theft by deception because she allegedly added a vehicle to her insurance policy after having just hit a deer.

According to charging documents filed by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, the charges revolve around a claim Samulewski filed at 6:55 a.m. Dec. 10.

“Jenna Samulewski contacted Progressive Insurance and requested a change to her automotive insurance policy,” said the investigating special agent.

Samulewski added a 2015 Volkswagen Passat to the policy and added her boyfriend, William Morrison, as a household member to the policy. The policy included comprehensive and collision coverage, which would have covered the deer accident, with a $500 deductible.

According to documents, Samulewski called at 7:58 a.m. Dec. 10 to submit a claim. She told a Progressive agent Morrison hit a deer on his way to work “less than five minutes ago” on Interstate 79 in Portersville.

The documents stated multiple interviews were conducted and recorded by insurance agents and investigators.

Through those interviews, special agents concluded Samulewski had been driving the car and hit a deer around 6 a.m. that morning, before adding the insurance.

Additionally, photographs submitted by Morrison for the accident were time-stamped at 7:23 a.m., despite Samulewski's claim the accident occurred around 7:55 a.m.

In an interview with special agents, Morrison also revealed Samulewski and he had ended their relationship after the accident, and he did not know why she told the insurance agent he was the driver.

“Morrison confirmed he was not truthful with Progressive Insurance in an attempt to have his vehicle repaired,” the special agent's report stated.

According to documents, Samulewski admitted that she knew Morrison did not have insurance coverage on the vehicle, and she attempted to have Progressive Insurance pay to repair the damage that occurred from striking the deer.

The documents said the damage was estimated to be around $3,083.

Samulewski is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing May 12 before District Judge William O'Donnell.
