Man faces new charges of assaulting ex-girlfriend

Bail was not an option this time for a Butler man accused of strangling his ex-girlfriend for a second time.

On Sunday, city police arrested and charged Jeremy M. Flood, 45, with a new set of charges, including strangulation, terroristic threats and simple assault.

Flood currently has a pending case, filed April 23, for similar allegations against the same woman, which include charges of strangulation, terroristic threats, simple assault and possession of a controlled substance.

After a May 3 preliminary hearing, all of those charges were held for court, and District Judge William Fullerton refused to reduce his bond any further than the $25,000 at which it was originally set.

Flood posted bail May 3, but at his arraignment Monday morning, Fullerton's ruling did not give Flood the option to leave because the request for bail was denied.

According to charging documents in the latest case, Flood's ex-girlfriend on Sunday reported the May 16 assault to police.

“(The ex-girlfriend) stated that Flood began to drink alcohol while at her residence and became angry,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. She allegedly told police Flood hit her in the face multiple times and strangled her until she lost consciousness.

“(The ex-girlfriend) stated after she had woken up, Flood had held a knife to her throat and stomach and threatened to kill her if she called 911,” police said. “This officer did view bruising on (her) face and chest as well as redness around her throat, which was consistent with her story.”

During the May 3 preliminary hearing, the narrative of April's alleged strangling sounded similar to the recent events.

During the ex-girlfriend's testimony, she described Flood getting drunk and trying to coerce her into having sex with him. She said when she refused, he strangled, beat and threatened her.

“'I'm going to knock you out, so I can take what I want,'” said the woman, citing the alleged words Flood said while he choked her. “I couldn't do anything. I was frozen. I couldn't breath.”

For the case filed in April, Flood is scheduled to appear June 29 for a formal arraignment in the Butler County Court of Common Pleas.

For the recent case, Flood is scheduled to appear May 24 for a preliminary hearing.

With his bail denied, he will likely attend both virtually from jail.
