School district name-change bill

State Rep. Marci Mustello, R-11, announced that legislation she introduced to allow school districts to change their names has passed the House Education Committee.

There is no process in place that would allow a school district to change its name.

“I applaud the House Education Committee for approving House Bill 232,” Mustello said.

Under the provisions of the bill, a district could change its name after a two-thirds majority vote of the local school board and approval from the state Department of Education.

Mustello took up the issue after being contacted by David Foley, superintendent of the South Butler County School District, who suggested to the school board in March 2019 that the district change its name to Knoch School District.

The school board passed a resolution in December 2019 to change the district’s name, and Mustello introduced a bill several months later to facilitate the change.

While the bill unanimously passed the House Education Committee in the 2019-20 session, it was not considered by the full House by the end of the session.

Mustello’s new bill will now move on to the full House for consideration.
