2 bikers hurt in separate crashes
Two motorcyclists were injured Saturday in separate crashes in Butler County.
The first wreck happened at about noon on Hansen Avenue in Butler Township, authorities said.
The man, believed to be in his 70s, was reportedly part of a group of bikers participating in a fundraising ride sponsored by American Legion Post 325 in Cowansville, American County.
The man apparently got caught up in heavy traffic and he ended up hitting a concrete wall, according to an organizer of the ride. A message left for Butler Township police, who investigated the crash, was not returned Sunday.
The cyclist was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries. He received 16 stitches to one of his legs and also received stitches to a finger, the organizer said.
The other wreck happened at about 2 p.m. on Route 58 near Van Dyke Road in Marion Township, where a man in his 50s laid the bike down and rolled over, said Joe Fitzgerald, chief of the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The man, who was wearing a helmet, was with about 10 other riders. He was not part of the Butler County American Legion Riders' 16th annual American Legion Veterans Ride, organizers of that event said.
The other riders with him saw the crash and stopped to help. The man was semi-conscious and suffered what were believed to be moderate injuries. A Superior Ambulance crew tended to him before he was taken to Grove City Medical Center.
State police are investigating but an accident report was not immediately available. A cause of the wreck was not known but Fitzgerald said the road had recently been tarred and chipped.
The crash closed the road for about 15 minutes. Harrisville and Clintonville volunteer firefighters also assisted at the scene.
