Pinning down victory

BUTLER TWP — Ryan Hannon’s 170-pound match lasted 1 minute, 57 seconds.

But it could have easily been over in 30 seconds. Hannon wanted to take his time and work on his technique.

What the Butler senior was most pleased about was the end result.

“I got six points for the team,” Hannon said.

The Golden Tornado used five pins to beat Mars 48-21 in a Class AAA Section 3-A match Wednesday night at the Butler Intermediate High School.

Hank Finan (145), Zach Raible (160), Will Bortmas (220) and J.D. Bojanac (285) also picked up pins for Butler (1-0, 1-0).

Bortmas, who moved up to 220 after wrestling at 160 last season, pinned Tony Lacava in 1:03. He hasn’t had to shift his style despite the switch.

“There’s not a lot of thought I put into it,” Bortmas said. “It’s just instinct by now. It’s more or less what’s there, I get.”

Hannon, who is 5-0 this season, built an 11-2 lead before pinning the Planets’ Ryan Barnes.

“I was trying to work on a little bit of everything, trying to score a few points here or there,” Hannon said. “Mainly, I wanted to go out and see what I could do, try some things and get a workout in.”

Butler coach Scott Stoner believes Hannon, who finished two wins away from a state appearance last season, has the ability to make a deep postseason run. Hannon opened the season by winning the Chartiers Houston Tournament title.

“He gets it,” Stoner said. “He really does a great job mentally. He’s one of the strongest kids for us. He’ll dissect and break things down for the kids when we’re teaching it.”

Butler lost by forfeit at 106, but won the next three matches to build an 11-6 lead.

Mars (0-1, 0-1) took its final lead, 12-11, when Silas Bender scored a pin at 132.

“I told everyone they needed to bring their heart with them,” first-year Mars coach Bart LaLonde said. “He brought it.”

Butler erased the Planets’ lead by winning the next five matches to go ahead 36-12.

Stone feels his team will need a better effort moving forward.

“We weren’t real sharp,” Stoner said. “When things aren’t getting done as they are suppose to out of my better and more experienced wrestlers, it’s bothersome. Tonight was a little troubling in a couple of performances.”

Nathan Bair (182) scored a pinfall for Mars and Alex Grosso (195) won by decision.

LaLonde said the Planets are still trying to figure out their lineup.

“I have to get a couple of my wrestlers back first,” LaLonde said. “That’s one of the things I’m going to have to conquer over the next few months. We have holes at 170 and 138. We have some holes and my guys are going to give up some weight.”
