Tractor fire cause unknown; none hurt

A pull tractor on Spithaller School Road caught fire Thursday afternoon, destroying the piece of equipment but not damaging the barn it was next to.

Katie Suppa was playing with her dogs at her Evans City home Thursday afternoon when she smelled something burning.

She saw her family's pull tractor on fire underneath a barn awning, and she and her neighbor attempted to put it out with two fire extinguishers.

Evans City Volunteer Fire Department ended up extinguishing the fire before it spread to the barn and the contents inside.

Firefighters at the scene said the cause of the fire was unknown, but Suppa, who said the lawnmower hadn't been used since last summer, said she believes it could have had something to do with the gas in the mower and the dry grass that remained stuck in it since last year.Jason Butterfield, a firefighter with the Evans City VFD, said this sort of incident does not occur often.
