BC3 hoops carry on without top scorers

BUTLE TWP — Butler County Community College's all-time basketball scoring leaders have moved on.

The Pioneers are carrying on without them.

Butler graduate Joel Stutz scored 1,366 points in his two seasons at BC3. He is now playing at Geneva College.

Karns City graduate Mackenzie Craig scored 1,277 points and grabbed 966 rebounds — both Pioneer women's basketball records. She is now playing at Indiana (Pa.) University.

“We've still got shooters on our men's team,” BC3 coach Dick Hartung said. “Our scoring will be much more balanced on the women's side.

“Last year, it was all Craig and (Knoch graduate Carly) Burdett with the scoring. All five of our starters can score consistently this year.”

Both Pioneer teams are coming off Western Pa. Collegiate Conference championships. The men were 12-14 overall, the women 10-13.

Both teams have already played on the road this season. Their home openers are Wednesday, when they host Mercyhurst North East at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively. The women's game will be played first.

Butler graduate Andrew Yonker is the only returning starter for the Pioneer men. The forward averaged 12.5 points per game and drained 82 treys as a freshman.

Fellow Butler grad Jake Slomers averaged a few minutes off the bench. No one else on the roster played at all last season.

“We're inexperienced for sure,” Hartung said. “We'll coach 'em up and this team will get better as we go.

“Most of our guys had that deer in headlights look during our first game. That will change.”

Slomers will start at a guard for the Pioneers. Butler graduate Dom Schmidt and Seneca Valley grad Jamir Carter, both sophomores, will also start in the backcourt.

Knoch grad Julian Sanks, a freshman, is starting at forward.

“Sanks is a good shooter and we're glad he's here,” Hartung said. “The other facets of his game, defense and running the floor, are things that have to come together for him.”

Grove City graduate Kaiden Young, a 6-foot-3 forward, is the top man off the bench for the Pioneers. Also on the roster are sophomore guard Cole McCarthy from Seneca Valley and freshman forward Noah McLean from Moniteau.

“This group has potential. We can shoot the ball again,” Hartung said.

BC3 led all of NJCAA Div. III last year with 365 3-pointers.

Craig averaged 24 points and Burdett 17 last year for the BC3 women. Knoch graduate Casey Kretzer is the team's top returning scorer. She averaged 16 points per game last year and sank 80 treys.

“She's the leader of this team, no question,” Hartung said.

Other starters are Slippery Rock graduate Michaella Roth and Seneca Valley grad Skye Wessel — both freshmen — at guard. Slippery Rock graduate Jenna Heitzenrater and Butler grad Alexis Barnhart are forwards.

Roth will be at shooting guard, Kretzer at point guard. Kretzer and Heitzenrater are the only sophomores on the roster.

Coming off the bench are forward Nicole Hartman and guard Katelyn Gavinski from First Baptist, forward Carrie Dingel from Butler and guard Elizabeth Stokes from Pine-Richland.

“We don't have a 30-point scorer, but I think we have four or five players who can score in double digits,” Hartung said.

“Like our men's team, the women's team will get better as the season goes on. We always get better. I've already seen big improvements in our women's squad from our first game to our second. That team will be just fine.”
