A Vandergrift man, charged with a 2015 crime spree in Butler County that included a store robbery, an attempted carjacking and a vehicle theft, pleaded guilty to two felony charges in Butler County Court on Monday.

Matthew J. Peltz, 31, entered the pleas to felony robbery and criminal attempt to robbery of a motor vehicle, after being charged with 13 criminal counts, five of them felonies — in three separate crimes on Jan. 29, 2015, in Jefferson and Buffalo townships.

The plea agreement calls for 19 to 36 months in a state correctional institution, followed by 36 months of probation and payment of restitution, when he is sentenced on July 25.

Peltz was initially charged with felony kidnapping, robbery, attempted robbery of a motor vehicle, theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies, as well as three misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and simple assault, and one count each of theft and receiving stolen property.

The terroristic threats charges were withdrawn at the preliminary hearing level, and all other charges will be dismissed as a result of the plea entered Monday.

Police said the crimes began about 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2015, at the BP/Fueland store on Dinnerbell Road in Jefferson Township, where Peltz allegedly attempted to steal a 2006 Jeep Commander.

Authorities say a 44-year-old Sarver woman had driven to the store and gone inside to use the automated teller machine, and when she returned to the vehicle, a man was inside hiding in back. The suspect brandished what appeared to be a handgun and told her to drive away.

She refused, jumping out of the vehicle and taking the keys, and the suspect ran off.

Shortly after, police responded to another call reporting the theft of a 1997 Jeep Cherokee from the Saxony Estates mobile home park on Driftwood Drive in Jefferson Township. The vehicle had been left running in a driveway, police said.

An hour after that vehicle was stolen, the BP/Fueland store on Ekastown Road in Buffalo Township was reportedly robbed at gunpoint.

Police said the suspect, wearing a dark ski mask, dark gloves and other dark clothing, brandished what looked like a handgun and demanded money from the safe.

The suspect made off with about $350 in cash in a bank bag, as well as rolled change, police said.

An hour after the store holdup, police recovered the Jeep Cherokee at the park-and-ride on Route 356 in Buffalo Township. Inside that vehicle, police found a black Velcro ski mask, a petty cash drawer with rolled coins in it, an empty green bank bag and a toy gun.

A tipster called the following day, reporting that Peltz was involved in the crimes, police said.

While investigating the case, police said Peltz's ex-girlfriend identified the toy gun as belonging to her, and he had taken it and painted it black.

Peltz was later arrested for unrelated crimes, including stealing a woman's Ford Explorer that was left running at the Fueland store in Jefferson Township. He was arrested at his mother's house in Kiski Township Feb. 4, 2015.

While searching the house, investigators gathered evidence that tied the Peltz to yet another stolen vehicle — this one a GMC Acadia that was left running Nov. 18, 2014, at the Saxony Estates.

He pleaded guilty Sept. 3 to two counts of felony theft and was sentenced to 7 to 14 months in the county prison and was released with time served.

Eight months later, crime lab reports were returned in January 2016, and showed a DNA profile on the mask, which police said belonged to Peltz.

He was then arrested on the charges in this case and held in Butler County Prison on $75,000 cash bail.

Police said Peltz' heroin addiction likely fueled the crimes.
