ZELIENOPLE — Early Thursday morning, a woman reported herself to borough police for a crime she can’t remember committing.

The 22-year-old unidentified female offender sent her confession via email to borough police at around 3 a.m., admitting her offense and saying police could come and arrest her.

The woman’s crime: the destruction of a fiberglass statue at St. Gregory’s Cemetery.

She called 911 at 6:30 a.m. to again report the offense.

The woman told police she was intoxicated at the time of the incident and does not remember the crime, but she believed she was responsible for the damage.

Borough Police Chief Jim Miller said despite her offer to be arrested, he does not believe her actions were intentionally malicious and that if any charge is filed it’d likely be a criminal mischief citation at most.

“She has some personal problems,” Miller said. “A couple family members died recently, and she was intoxicated.”

Borough police reached out to the church and the Catholic Parish Cemeteries Association to see how much it will cost to fix or replace the statue.

The church has yet to press charges, Miller said, and officers are unsure if they will at all.

“If there’s a charge, I’m sure it’ll be criminal mischief,” Miller said. “It sounded like she was just kind of upset about a few different things, some personal issues.”
