Teenager behind bars on drug, gun charges
A teenage felon is behind bars on six-figure bond after state police said they found him with a handgun that had an obliterated serial number and nearly a “brick” of suspected heroin in Butler Township.
Troopers deployed a Taser around 5:30 p.m. Saturday before arresting 19-year-old Zahvair D. Palmer of McKeesport, Allegheny County, authorities said.
Palmer is facing felony drug and weapons charges. He is in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond. He also is being held on a bench warrant out of Allegheny County.
Police said while conducting an apparent traffic-related investigation at the Sheetz parking lot on Route 8 north and Vogel Road, they smelled marijuana coming from Palmer's car.
A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up 48 glassine bags of suspected heroin. In drug parlance, a “brick” of heroin is 50 single-dose glassine bags.
When police attempted to arrest Palmer, he allegedly fled. He was found a short time later, police said, and had to be Tasered.
Troopers resumed the car search and found a loaded 9 mm pistol under the driver's seat, according to charging documents. The gun's serial number had been altered.
Police noted that Palmer has a prior conviction for carrying a firearm without a license. Because of his record, he is prohibited from possessing any guns in Pennsylvania.
Also under state law, only persons 21 and over can qualify for a right-to-carry license.
District Judge Kevin O'Donnell on Sunday arraigned Palmer on felony charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, felons not to possess firearms and possession of a firearm without a carry license.
Additionally, he was arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest and a summary charge of driving without a license.
Online court records did not list an attorney for him.
