Saturday fire destroys recreational vehicle

A fire in the 200 block of Cobham Lane in Jefferson Township destroyed a parked recreational vehicle Saturday afternoon, but no one was hurt.

JEFFERSON TWP — A fire in the 200 block of Cobham Lane destroyed a parked recreational vehicle Saturday afternoon, but no one was hurt.

The vehicle's owner had been inside the RV earlier Saturday to perform routine winter maintenance, according to Chief Chris Ballina of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company.

Firefighters believe animals may have built a nest in the vehicle's heating system, resulting in a fire when the owners turned on the RV.

Damages to the vehicle alone were estimated at about $80,000, and there were further cosmetic damages to the outside of an adjacent garage. Flames didn't penetrate into the garage's interior. The garage is not attached to the home on the same property.

The owners, who asked not to be identified, have insurance for the damages. They reported the active fire at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

Besides Saxonburg VFC, the Buffalo Township, Herman and Penn Township Volunteer firefighters responded.
