Prentice shines in NC victory
ADAMS TWP — Sometimes there are things that a coach cannot teach.
That would include the running skill of North Catholic quarterback Joe Prentice.
“Joey is a heck of an athlete,” North Catholic coach Pat O’Shea said. “I think we’re blessed to have a quarterback that can run, throw, and shifty which we saw tonight.”
Prentice was just one of the key pieces that helped North Catholic defeat Valley 51-6 Friday night at Mars in a key Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference game.
The junior went 7 of 11 through the air for 97 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, while adding 46 yards on the ground.
Junior running back Kyle Tipinski got some work in as well with 67 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns. The duel threat worked wonders for the Trojans en route to a 45-point win.
“Kyle is just starting to feel what it is like to be a running back,” O’Shea said. “You can see it in his face, he’s smiling, he likes it. He’s just starting to learn the craft.”
In the early going, both teams showed signs of struggle.
A red zone interception by Prentice was followed up by a Valley fumble just two plays later. Tipinski would cash in on the opportunity with a seven-yard run.
The Vikings’ following drive would see another fumble, which quickly became a theme, ending the day with four total.
“We knew they were a good football coming in,” Valley coach Muzzy Colosimo said. “With injuries last week and inexperience at quarterback, it’s not good to play a good team when you’re down like that.”
North Catholic scored 44 points in the first half, which sparked a running clock to start the third quarter.
Valley would eventually get points on the board off a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Domanick Simmons, who in total only attempted three passes.
“I just didn’t want to get anybody else hurt,” Colosimo said. “We played as hard as we could and we played a lot of young kids.”
At the end of the day, six different Trojans carried the ball, and six others each caught at least one pass.
Nick Maher was the Trojans’ leading receiver with two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown.
Next week North Catholic will make its way to East Allegheny for a match-up with the 2-0 Wildcats.
“They are a team loaded with athletes,” O’Shea said of East Allegheny. “There are some things from tonight we need to go back and work on.
“Last week we had no turnovers, this week put the ball on the ground. Last week we had no penalties, this week we had a couple. When we play a team like East Allegheny, we need to make sure we clean that part of it up.”
