Rockets roll past Franklin, 52-12
FRANKLIN — Slippery Rock remained undefeated, compiling 443 yards of total offense in a 52-12 whitewashing of Franklin Friday night.
The Rockets (3-0) jumped out to an early lead on their first possession, as Kaleb Kamerer capped off a 12-play, 76-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Kamerer ended the game with four touchdowns and 168 yards rushing.
Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz was impressed with his offensive line.
“They really controlled the game,” Wendereusz said.
“We have some guys that can be pretty good. We have the skill guys to run around back there, but at the end of the day, if we can't block anyone, it doesn't matter.”
The host Knights (1-2) would answer back two minutes later when Ian Haynes connected with Cade Adams from 62 yards out to cut the lead to 7-6, but it would be the closest that Franklin would get the rest of the night.
Kamerer would add his second touchdown of the night in the second quarter, and Vito Pelosi hooked up with Patrick Shea on a touchdown pass to give the Rockets a 21-6 lead.
Nathaniel Willison added a field goal late in the half to extend the lead to 24-6 at half time.
The Slippery Rock defense was superb, as it held the Knights to just four yards rushing for the game. The Knights managed 178 yards passing, but 142 of it was on two plays.
“That quarterback (Ian Haynes) is pretty good,” Wendereusz said, “but our coaches did a great job and our kids on defense executed well.”
The Rockets continued to roll in the second half, as they added four more touchdowns to put the game away. Kamerer scored twice more, and Pelosi and Kid Scarborough added the final scores late in the game.
The Rockets, who only won four games all of last year, are almost to that total just three games into the 2018 season.
“I think familiarity of how we like to play, and having guys with us for the third year helps,” Wendereusz said. “They have a pretty good idea of what we want and how to do it.”
