A Butler woman, charged with drunkenly attempting to run over another woman, will remain in county jail after a bond reduction motion was denied in Butler County Court on Friday.

Judge William Shaffer denied the motion by Shelly Godfrey, 48, who continues to be held in Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail. Shaffer said he would entertain a bond modification after a drug and alcohol evaluation was completed at the jail and treatment was recommended, which he ordered to be completed.

Godfrey's attorney, Assistant Public Defender Maura Palumbi, asked that Godfrey be released to a treatment facility, “whatever treatment is recommended.”

District Attorney Richard Goldinger said he was not opposed to Godfrey completing a drug and alcohol evaluation at the jail, but was opposed to any bond reduction pending that evaluation.

Butler police charged Godfrey with felony aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, misdemeanor simple assault, DUI and DUI highest rate, and summary charges of hit-and-run and reckless driving after an incident in the 500 block of West Brady Street March 4.

Police said Godfrey was allegedly more than twice the state's legal limit for alcohol when she intentionally tried to run over another woman.

No injuries were reported.

Officers responded to the home after a report of four people arguing, and were told that Godfrey had punched and bitten a Seven Fields man at the house, according to court documents.

Police said the residents told Godfrey to leave and she drove away, but later circled the block and allegedly drove toward the woman, swerving and intentionally trying to hit her, causing the woman to jump out of the way and run back inside.

Godfrey is accused of driving back a second time and hitting a parked vehicle before fleeing.

Penn Township police later pulled Godfrey over for speeding and reckless driving on Route 8, according to court documents.

A city officer was notified and responded to Penn Township. Godfrey appeared intoxicated, police said, and she failed field sobriety tests.

She was taken for a breath test that showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.185 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Palumbi said Godfrey's only criminal record is a 1993 DUI.

Godfrey is scheduled for formal arraignment in DUI court April 23.
