'Oliver' shines behind strong performances

BUTLER TWP — Ralph Christy Jr. takes what is normally a dark and dank play and makes it quite enjoyable with colorful sets and wardrobe.

Sing Hosanna's Fall production “Oliver” opens tonight, but a small preview audience took the show in Thursday night.

The infamous “Food, Glorious Food” showcased the cute little lovelies of the cast who capably twirled and toted their bowls of gruel until the whole stage turned into an energetic romp after little orphan Oliver, played by young Evie Fox, asked for ‘some more' and well choreographed bedlam ensued.

“That's Your Funeral” number led by Nolan Fox, as Mr. Sowerberry, was quite the macabre ghastly affair but extremely well done. The scene closed with a touching rendition of “Where is Love?,” by Oliver.

She was spot on with the lyrics but her volume was a bit on the soft side, undoubtedly opening night jitters easily overcome by her capable performance tonight.

The Artful Dodger, played by Andrew Stock, led the “Consider Yourself” number with considerable ease. Stock's comfort on the stage is evident and his voice is deepening with age.

Fagan's gang of hooligans did a great job picking pockets and stealing hearts as adorable little urchins. Eric Snyder was laudable as the professional pick pocket shepherd. His “Pick a Pocket or Two” was enjoyable.

The mother and daughter duo of Rachel and Jackie Creaturo were fabulous as Nancy and Bet in ‘It's a Fine Life.” Rachel's vocals were commanding in all her solos.

Most moving was her “As Long as He Needs Me,” and the reprise of it later in the second half. Her lament to loving a man who is hard to love was emotionally compelling.

The maniacal Bill Sykes was expertly portrayed by Scott Shearer, who offered up a scary and powerful performance of the violent and vengeful Sykes. He was bold, brash and malevolent in every sense.

The tender “Who will buy?” number was handled skillfully by Jordan Luntz, Becca Bly, Emma Herrle, Austin Cehelsky and Nathan Rockcastle.

Several stellar performances and wonderful scenery combined to make this unique production one of Sing Hosanna's best.
