It's a Win-Win: Father's Day gifts to make you both happy

Unless he begs you to, please — I repeat, please — do not buy any man in your life a tie this Father’s Day.

Why? Well, other than the fact that it’s overdone and cliche, it’s also boring, expensive and no benefit to you.

Here are a few gift ideas that will make him happy, not break the bank and will offer you a little something, too. This is your basic win-win gift-giving scenario.

• Grilling to give your kitchen a rest: There’s really no point in going into how all men love grills and grilling and all things grillable. We know all that.

What you may not know is that you can pick up a retro-looking charcoal grill for less than $50. This handy, portable, space-saving contraption will delight the guy in your life while you get a break from dinner duty.

Does he already own a grill? No problem, buy him grilling accoutrements: platters and forks, mesquite wood chips and steak flavorings. You win, he wins.

• Guy lit: Head to the nearest bookstore and check out the men’s magazine section. You may be amazed at the variety of topics that interest you. Not kidding.

Pick up a few subscriptions that will make you both happy. Men’s Fitness has cooking tips and travel ideas. Imbibe Magazine offers the latest in cocktail and coffee culture. Outdoors Magazine is all about hiking, biking and running.

And Esquire may officially be for men, but plenty of women read it. You win, he wins.

• Guys’ night in: Most men like to have a night set aside for their buddies, so why not give that as a gift?

Pick up poker chips, new cards, a card shuffler and a dozen handmade coupons offering a free night per month just for the guys.

Tell him you’ll order the pizza while you head out the door. He’ll love it and you’ll have an evening to yourself to enjoy as you’d like: alone in a movie theater with a huge bucket of popcorn, strolling the bookstore with a large latte or meeting up with your girlfriends at the cool new restaurant downtown. You win, he wins.

Father’s Day is soon and money is tight, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find creative gifts to make both of you happy. This year it’s all about keeping it local, easy and cheap.
