City resident pens young adult novel
Lifelong Butler resident Lorraine Martin has written a young adult book called “Ruby’s Road,” about the fantastic adventure of high school senior Ruby Mast.
Martin describes Ruby as “an 18-year-old high school senior living in a small rural town after emigrating from Ireland a year before. She is shy and self-conscious and only has a few friends.”
Ruby and her parents have moved to the United States to be nearer to her grandmother. “Ruby loves her parents, but one gets the sense in the book that she is independent,” Martin said.
Ruby’s adventure begins when she meets an elf who is a prince and has become lost in his quest to save his sister from an evil wizard. Ruby accompanies him on his journey, during which they have to decide whether to rely on each other or fail in their mission and possibly lose their lives.
Martin said the focus of the story is the importance of teamwork. “Ruby learns her own strengths and weaknesses, and generally grows into a mature, brave woman during this journey,” she said. “She goes into this journey as a shy, bored little girl and ends up playing an integral part in a battle for freedom and the lives of people she has grown to love.”
The author is a 2001 graduate of Butler High School and received a bachelor’s in English with a minor in theater from Grove City College in 2005.
Her novel is based on various recurring dreams she had as a child.
