Butler County's great daily newspaper

Despite fires, floods and COVID, we made it through tumultuous year

The year just ended started with hope that it would be better than the pandemic-dominated 2020.

It drew to a close with a resurgence of COVID infections and deaths, canceled professional sports games, confusing and divisive mask mandates and pleas to get a booster vaccine shot.

In between, we learned more than we wanted to about supply chains, variant strains and TikTok challenges.

The pandemic introduced us to new economic terms — the she-cession — and brought old ones —inflation — back into prominence.

But behind the big headlines, we carried on as best we could.

In Butler County, the news was also filled with fires, floods and prayer vigils.

There were reunions and anniversaries. There was sheep-riding at the Big Butler Fair in July and flag-waving at a Knoch School Board session in September.

And the year ends again with hopes that the new year will be better.
