'Seussical' provides start-to-finish fun
Sing Hosanna!’s costumes and colors made for a bright launch of “Seussical,” the group’s spring offering which opens to the public tonight at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.
Several excellent leads carry the production from start to finish.
A host of Whos and other classical characters from Dr. Seuss books leaped to life on the stage. Maxwell McAuley opened as the Cat under the red and white striped hat. He was fun and full of energy as he guided the action from scene to scene.
The ensemble opening “Oh the Thinks you can Think” was an energetic display of what was to unfold in the two-act show.
JoJo, the boy who thinks big thinks, was played by Camden Rockcastle, who did a great job with the role. His diction and projection were spot on, even when the microphones misfired.
Camden shared the stage with his dad and sister, Nathan Rockcastle and Megan Rockcastle, who actually portrayed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor of Whoville. Nathan and Megan did more than share the scenes, and the stage, they also had the opportunity for a few well-done duets. Little brother Peyton was also on stage as well.
“Horton Hears a Who” introduced us to Matt Nocera as the pudgy pachyderm who is bound to protect the invisible land of Who.
Nocera seemed at ease in the cumbersome costume and his vocals were clear and bright. He did justice to the tenderhearted Horton. His opportunity to shine came in “Alone in the Universe” and “Solla Sollew.”
Horton’s admirer, Gertrude McFuzz, was played by Tara Heade, whose vocals were all over the place. The role enabled her to showcase her range.
She personalized the role of the normally shy Gertrude into her own with some bold vocals, sass and verve. She delivered the goods in “Amazing Gertrude” and “All for you.”
Her fellow bird, Mayzie La Bird, was played by Ruby Shearer. Shearer held her own as the fine-feathered friend who was fun and flirty — just what the role asks for, especially in “Amazing Mayzie” and “How Lucky You Are.”
Throughout the show, a sweet group of Bird Girls lent their vocals to the story and jungle animals came to life to taunt poor Horton and bring him to trial.
The special effects in “It’s Possible” combined with great vocals of JoJo and the Cat in the Hat, made the scene one of the most memorable in the show.
The fun show is a light escape from the daily drama and it’s perfect for the whole family. “Seussical” runs through Sunday.
Tickets are on sale at May’s Music Shoppe, 247 E. Jefferson St. Tickets also will be available at the door before performances.
