Firefighters removed the roof from a car that crashed New Year's Eve in Washington Township to free the driver. The man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.

WASHINGTON TWP — Firefighters had to cut the roof off of a car to free a man in his 30s after the car he was driving rolled over in the area of 417 Hilliard Avenue in the township Thursday evening.

The man was then taken by ambulance to the nearby grounds of the North Washington Rodeo, placed in a medical helicopter and flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with possible internal injuries.

State police, the North Washington and Eau Claire volunteer fire departments and Karns City Regional Ambulance Service responded to the one-car accident that occurred at 5:50 p.m.

Travis Sutton, second assistant chief of the North Washington Volunteer Fire Department, said the roof of the car was pushed down, trapping the driver.

“We had to cut the roof off to get him out,” Sutton said.

The driver, who was alone in the car, was conscious during the entire ordeal, he said.
