BC3 lists concerts, events for 2005-06

BUTLER TWP - Butler County Community College will host a Performing Arts Series and a Big Band Jazz Series for the 2005-06 season.

The shows take place in the Succop Theater on campus.

The Performing Arts Series includes:

"Always, Patsy Cline," joint venture with Butler's Musical Theatre Guild as reprised from summer of 2004, at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17 and at 3 p.m. Sept. 18

"Tlen-Huicani," traditional music of Mexico performed by the group voted the "Best Folk Group in Mexico" by the Union of Music and Theater Critics, at 8 p.m. Oct. 8

"The Taming of the Shrew" presented by The National Players, who previously staged "Our Town" in Butler, at 8 p.m. Nov. 12

Holiday Concert with the North Pittsburgh Philharmonic, a 70-piece orchestra, at 8 p.m. Dec. 16

Second City, the famous comedy troupe that defined sketch comedy and launched the careers of John Candy, Rick Moranis, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara and Harold Ramis, at 8 p.m. Jan. 27

"Bach, Beatles and Bluegrass" with the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble, hailed for revitalizing and reshaping a type of ensemble music that enjoyed nationwide popularity at the turn of the 20th century, at 8 p.m. March 11

Ensemble Chaconne performing "The Music of Benjamin Franklin," music that underscored the life of one of our founding fathers, at 8 p.m. March 25

"Chapter 6," a musical summary of "The Wizard of Oz" performed a capella in close harmonies and rhythmic vocal sounds by this group of young men, at 8 p.m. May 6

The Big Band Jazz Series will feature four afternoons and an evening of music:

Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra, featuring area performers along with Slippery Rock University professor Steve Hawk, at 3 p.m. Oct. 2

"Swingin' the Benny Goodman Songbook," with jazz vocalist Terry Blaine accompanied by Mark Shane on piano and clarinetist Allan Vache playing the arrangements that made Goodman famous, at 3 p.m. Nov. 20

Pittsburgh Jazz Society Big Band performing "Hot Jazz for a Cold Winter's Night III," new works and classic standards, at 8 p.m. Jan. 13

"An Afternoon of Gershwin" with the David Leonardt Jazz Group, at 3 p.m. Feb. 26

Trinity Jazz Orchestra, playing hits from the Big Band era, at 3 p.m. April 23.

Single tickets cost $15 in advance and $17 at the door; students pay $10. Single tickets will be available Sept. 1, except for those for "Patsy Cline," which are already available. Season tickets are available through Tuesday.

Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to noon Fridays. Call 724-284-8505.
