Audience has a blast with 'Nunsense'

Production takes playful spin on Catholicism

The sisterhood of silliness took the stage at the Musical Theatre Guild Production Center for the opening night of "Nunsense."

The sellout crowd was definitely sold on the hit show. It was hard at times to figure out who was having the most fun — the cast or the audience.

One audience member even won an award for her unique and prominent laughter throughout the production.

The irreverent and unorthodox glimpse into life in the order of The Sisterhood of Hoboken was amusing and well spun. Author Dan Goggin crafted a slew of "inside" jokes and double entendres which the cast delivered quite capably.

As in all her previous stints as the Reverend Mother, Lori Williamson was spot on with her amazing voice and her comical expressions. The scene where she sampled a little "rush" was quite hysterical and had the audience in stitches.

I'm not sure what the bishop would think, but the Catholics in residence seemed not to be bothered.

The cast numbers featured fabulous harmonies, and the sisters shared remarkable camaraderie on stage with a comfortable chemistry between them.

Carol Albright portrayed the number two nun, reprising her role of Sister Hubert from "Nunsense II" 13 years ago. Old habits don't die as she put on another super performance.

Her novice nun, Sister Mary Leo, played by Martha Kriley, had the voice of an angel. She was both funny and sweet at the same time. She shared the stage with her mother, Robin, who portrayed Sister Mary Amnesia, the clueless nun who lost her memory when a crucifix landed on her head.

Becky Plymale's Sister Robert Anne was truly a delight. As one of the most irreverent nuns, she was crafty, cunning and funny. The audience seemed to be rooting for her to have her time to shine, and she did that in the number, "Playing Second Fiddle."

The show, though definitely fun, can at times be a bit risqué and might not prove to be a good choice for younger audiences. While much might go over their heads, some of the below-the-belt humor could be awkward.

With tickets sales soaring, an extra performance might be added Thursday. Please check with May's Music Shoppe or the MTG for additional details.

One wall was flanked by a vast collection of silent auction items. Winners will be drawn July 20. Proceeds will go toward operating expenses.

This fall, the Guild will produce the "Wizard of Oz."
