Stocking up on Life, Candyland, Scrabble

When it comes to choosing which games are included in the Butler County Alliance for Children’s Play Safe, Stay Safe Initiative, it’s all about the fun, said the Alliance’s executive director Denna Hays.

“We started just asking around, ‘What kind of game did you like to play as a kid?’ and we just made a list,” said Hays.

The unscientific polling led Hays and her volunteers to stock up on board games such as Life, Candyland, Scrabble and Hungry, Hungry Hippos, as well as puzzles and decks of cards, both regular and Uno.

Various games are placed in a plastic bag along with fliers from community organizations such as the Center for Community Resources and the Penn State Extension.

Hays said the children’s alliance has gotten the games, cards and puzzles from the Amazon and Target websites.

“We’ve also gotten some things from Playthings Inc., and we’ve bought some dice games from Dollar Tree,” said Hays. “People have been buying items on the wish lists and sending them to us.”

She said people have been donating gift cards and cash to purchase games, too.

The nonprofit child advocacy group is not accepting donations of used games or puzzles.
