Butler woman gets probation in slashing case
A Butler woman was sentenced Wednesday to two years of probation and more than $46,000 in restitution toward her victim's medical care after being found guilty in January of slashing a man's throat during a night filled with drinking, egg fights and wrestling.
In 2017, Tara Kyles-Edge, 36, was charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault for accusations that she cut a man's throat using a broken wine glass.
But during a jury trial in January, her lawyer, J.W. Hernandez-Cuebas, argued that his client accidentally injured the victim when she threw a wine glass at a wall behind the man, causing a ricocheted glass shard to slit the man's throat.
A jury found her guilty of the misdemeanor simple assault, dropping the felony. On Wednesday, Common Pleas Judge William Shaffer, who presided over the trial, sentenced Kyles-Edge to probation, following sentencing guidelines.
Along with probation, Kyles-Edge must pay thousands of dollars in restitution to several entities. She must pay $136 to the victim, who suffered severe blood loss from the 3-inch cut along his neck, according to trial testimony. She must pay $674 to Butler Ambulance, which responded to the call, and $1,046 to Butler Memorial Hospital, where the victim, Mark Holmes, was first taken.
After being taken to the hospital, Holmes was air-transported by STAT Medivac to UPMC Presbyterian for further medical care. For that service, Kyles-Edge must pay STAT Medivac $19,927. And for the victim's care at UPMC, Kyles-Edge must pay the medical provider $24,855.
In a written statement to police recalling the events, Kyles-Edge stated a group of four people, including herself and Holmes, spent the night egging each other, wrestling and drinking wine and beer at Kyles-Edge's home on Wagner Avenue.
She noted that the group regularly got together for these activities. But on Aug. 4, 2017, things escalated.
“We had a nice time. We were egging and wrestling,” Kyles-Edge said during the trial.
Earlier that day Kyles-Edge kicked the victim out of her house after an argument, but soon after repeatedly texted him to coax him back.
After the victim and Kyles-Edge debated the merits of having an egg fight, the group decided to continue their festivities at Kyles-Edge's home.
And that was when the argument between the two began, and Kyles-Edge said she threw a wine glass at a wall near Holmes' head and that she never meant to hurt Holmes.
