A broken window and other debris sits on the ground at the rear of the Catholic Charities building in the city, where police say a teenager Monday barricaded himself in a room where he had been staying. The suspect was arrested and placed in Butler County Prison.

A young man is accused of barricading himself in a room at a charity building in Butler on Monday afternoon and chucking items out of an upstairs window at people who were walking below.

The suspect, Tyler W. Abbott, 18, who has no known address, later admitted that he was intoxicated, upon his arrest. No one was injured.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Abbott on charges of resisting arrest, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and underage drinking. He was in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Butler police said they were called about 3:10 p.m. to the Catholic Charities building on West New Castle Street for a report of a man “out of control and destroying the place.”

Patrolman Andrew Nielderlander arrived there and he described hearing “the sound of breaking glass” on North Jackson Street.

When the officer got a closer look, according to court documents, he saw Abbott throwing property out of the second-story window “where pedestrians were walking below.”

Among the tossed items, said police Lt. Anthony Fatta, was a single-drawer dresser, a drinking glass and a television antenna.

The defendant is accused of breaking the window and the metal window frame.

Police believe the teen had been staying or living in the room at the facility.Two other officers arrived and police knocked on the door to the room, attempting to get inside. But the defendant hurled an expletive at the officers, telling them he would not open the door.Police said when they tried to get inside, they discovered the door was barricaded by a large dresser.The teen eventually opened the door enough to allow the officers to enter and arrest him, police said, But he allegedly struggled with police when they tried to put him in handcuffs.While being led to a police car outside, documents said, he made the unsolicited comment, “You guys know I'm drunk.”Police subsequently spoke to an employee at the charity, who estimated damage caused in the incident at $1,200.As part of the defendant's bail, Stoughton placed the condition on it that he is not allowed back on the charity's property.
