SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team has earned an at-large bid in the Atlantic Region and will compete in the NCAA Division II Championships.
The Rock (16-8) is the No. 5 seed in the region and will face No. 4 seed Mercyhurst (17-7) Monday in Institute, W.Va.
ERIE — Knoch graduate Jenna Shelton, a member of the Penn State Behrend women's track and field team, has earned first team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference in the 800 and 1,500 meters.Shelton earned second team in the 400 meters.
Knoch graduate and Saint Vincent College freshman softball pitcher Celia Knappenberger has been named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Player of the Year.Knappenberger is 16-7 this season with five saves and a 1.62 earned run average. Her opponents are hitting a league-low ,221 against her. She is 7-2 with a 1.88 ERA in nine league starts.Saint Vincent (29-14) won the PAC championship and will face No. 18 DePauw in the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday.
CHERRY TWP — Moniteau freshman baseball pitcher Branson Carson came up with a stellar effort on the mound recently for his New Castle Storm 14-under travel team.Carson tossed a three-hitter and struck out 15 in a 3-1 victory over the Western Pa. travel team. He pitched seven innings.
TORONTO — Ricky Ray has retired, ending his Canadian Football League career after 16 seasons and a record four Grey Cup titles as a starting quarterback.The 39-year-old former Sacramento State star missed most of last season with the Toronto Argonauts with a neck injury.Ray leaves as one of the CFL's most prolific passers. He's second in career passing percentage at 68.16, behind only Edmonton's Trevor Harris (70.36).
ATHENS, Ga. — A Georgia track athlete was expected to make a full recovery after being impaled by a javelin during practice.Freshman sprinter Elija Godwin was injured Tuesday when he and his fellow sprinters were doing backward sprints at the university's track. Godwin backed into a javelin that was implanted in the ground, causing the rear part of the spear to pierce his back.A report from campus police said Godwin suffered a punctured and collapsed left lung.
