BUTLER TWP — Five seniors started the game.

One senior gave Butler the lead for good.

David Leslie's sixth trey of the night opened the scoring in overtime and triggered a 13-0 Golden Tornado run in the extra session of Tuesday night's 82-73 boys basketball win over Hampton on Senior Night in the Butler gym.

Leslie struck for a career-high 22 points in the win. He started the game with fellow seniors Mattix Clement, Logan Koegler, Brayden Koegler and Jordan Stutz.

“That was the best part of the whole thing for me,” Leslie said of Butler's starting five. “We've been playing sports together since we were little kids.

“To take the floor with all of those guys to start this game was special ... and we did pretty well.”

The Koeglers and Stutz have seen limited varsity minutes this season. The quintet played the entire first quarter Tuesday. The Tornado trailed 15-10 after one.

A 16-3 Hampton run in the second period gave the Talbots (4-11) a 33-20 lead with 2:44 left in the first half.

“They shot really well tonight,” Butler coach Matt Clement said of Hampton. “When a team shoots well, they're dangerous.”

The Tornado (7-7) closed the half on an 8-0 run and the game was deadlocked at 48 through three quarters,

“It was just back and forth from there,” Hampton coach Joe Lafko said.

The score was tied on eight occasions, the last at 69 as Butler's Devin Carney sank a jumper with 30 seconds left in regulation.

The Talbots held for the last shot, but Matt DeMatteo's 12-footer rimmed out and Carney snared the rebound as time expired.

“You're playing on the road against a good team, all you can ask is to have a chance to win the game at the end,” Lafko said. “We had that chance. It just didn't go our way tonight.”

Overtime went entirely Butler's way.

Hampton missed its first six shots of the overtime period. Butler canned three of its four shots in the extra session — including treys by Leslie and Carney — and five of six free throws to put the game away.

Leslie sank eight of 10 shots from the floor, including his six treys.

“They were paying a lot of attention (defensively) to Mattix, Devin and Madden (Clement) and David made them pay,” Clement said. “Mattix and Devin were finding him.

“It's one thing to be open. You still have to make the shots and he did.”

Butler's other senior, Clayton Holt, got in the game in the final minute.

“Every player is a part of this team,” Clement said. “These guys all pull for each other. Logan Koegler has been giving us quality minutes this year. Brayden and Jordan hit 3s when they were in there and you could hear the support.

“These guys are a tightly knit group.”

Carney did not score in the first half, but wound up with 17 points and five rebounds. Mattix Clement had 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.

“Mattix forced some turnovers out there when he was dead tired,” Coach Clement said. “That's what I'm most proud of with him, his effort and the kind of teammate he's been.”

Butler sank 16 treys on the night.

“They've got shooters all over the place,” Lafko said. “You almost have to pick who to guard. Leslie had a huge game for them.”

To have it on Senior Night made it even better.

“I've been coming to games here for years, watching seniors do their thing on Senior Night,” Leslie said. “This felt great.”

DeMatteo had 26 points — hitting six treys — and collected five rebounds for Hampton. Brennan Murray had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
