Horn, SV defense cruise, 38-0
HEMPFIELD TWP — Seneca Valley's Dustin Horn entered Friday's game against Hempfield with a confidence usually associated with a more-experienced quarterback.
His play followed suit.
Making the first varsity start of his career, the senior picked apart Hempfield's defense, completing 11 of 14 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns.
His one-yard run early in the fourth quarter capped the scoring in a dominating 38-0 win at Spartan Stadium.
“Our coaches have been great and they had me prepared,” said Horn. “Our line did a great job the whole night.
“All those balls I threw tonight, it was just the result of our guys getting open. It was a team win.”
Last year, Horn played behind Gabe Lawson, who accounted for 20 total touchdowns before graduating.
“He's so coachable,” SV coach Ron Butschle said of Horn. “He bided his time and I'm happy as heck for him.”
Horn and the Raiders opened the game in impressive fashion, marching 87 yards in 12 plays. SV converted a pair of fourth-down plays on the drive. The first was a 17-yard pass to Ethan West that set the Raiders up at Hempfield's 10.
It appeared as if the Raiders may settle for a field goal attempt, but on fourth-and-goal from the 11, Horn lofted a jump-ball into the left corner of the end zone, where Luke Lawson made the catch to give the Raiders the lead with 5:34 left in the first period.
“That drive got a bit of the jitters out, but when we click on all cylinders, we're a good football team.”
The Raiders let opportunities slip from their grasp on the next two drives, which began at Hempfield's 23 and 17, respectively, but led to no points.
Adam Davies kicked a 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter for a 10-0 edge.
Hempfield then mounted its most impressive drive of the night. With starting quarterback Christian Zilli on the sideline with an injury, Jake Phillips stepped in and led the Spartans (1-1) to SV's 19.
On first down, he attempted a quick slant pass, but it was intercepted by linebacker Mitch Curran. Fifty-two of Hempfield's 79 yards in the first half came on the drive.
Horn connected with Lucas Lambert on a 13-yard scoring pass on the final play of the first half, then added touchdown passes to Connor Lyczek (25 yards) and James Sprentz (54) in the third quarter.
Ethan West, who tallied 144 yards from scrimmage in last year's 40-12 win here, rushed for 87 yards on 21 attempts.
“A lot of the skill guys who made plays tonight are seniors and they're a close group, all friends off the field,” said Butschle. “My heart is happy to see them succeed.”
Seneca Valley will host Norwin next Friday.
