Conno man faces drug, assault, other charges

Police respond to domestic call

ZELIENOPLE — Police discovered a marijuana pipe in a baby's crib Friday night while investigating a suspected case of domestic violence at a German Street home.

Next to the crib, borough officers also found a metal pot the baby's father allegedly used to burn pain medication patches.

And in the room's closet was a lamp commonly used to grow marijuana, according to a court documents,

Police arrested Daniel Lee Kopp, 36, of Connoquenessing Township on child endangerment and drug charges in the investigation that began about 8:25 p.m. when authorities were called to the home where the defendant's girlfriend and two children live.

Amanda Merriman told police that Kopp assaulted her when she confronted him about his drug use, documents said.

She said the altercation erupted after she returned home and noticed an odor of something burning inside. She said Kopp was there to watch their 6-month-old daughter and her 5-year-old son.

Merriman went into a bedroom and found a small aluminum pot with burned residue on the bottom. When she asked Kopp what he was burning, Merriman said Kopp told her it was none of her business.

Kopp, during a later interview with investigators, said he used the pot to try and "cook off" the painkilling medication contained on lidocaine patches, a police affidavit said.

The experiment, he admitted, didn't work.

During an argument between the couple, Kopp allegedly grabbed Merriman by the throat, a police affidavit said.

The woman said he threw her down. She claimed Kopp punched her in her face and pulled her hair.

Police said they noticed red marks on Merriman's neck, scratches on her face and a swollen left cheek.

After finding a marijuana pipe in the crib, an officer saw a red glow coming from the closet behind the crib. Inside, police found a heat lamp hanging from a clothes rod.

When asked about the grow lamp, Merriman told officers she recalled Kopp at one point had small plants in two containers "but did not know what he did with them," a police affidavit said.

Police went outside to a garden area at the home and found a pair of black containers that each contained a suspected marijuana plant. The defendant, documents said, admitted he used the lamp to grow the plants.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Kopp on two felony charges of manufacturing a controlled substance. He also is charged with two counts each of child endangerment, reckless endangerment, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Additionally, Kopp is charged with simple assault, harassment and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

He is in the Butler County Prison on $20,000 bail.
