A Karns City man pleaded guilty in Butler County Court on Wednesday to growing marijuana at his home.

Donald W. Selfridge, 53, pleaded guilty to felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance before county Judge Timothy McCune.

The plea agreement calls for a sentence of 24 months in the county Intermediate Punishment program, with the first 90 days on house arrest and electronic monitoring, as well as restitution and fines.

He is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 28.

He was initially charged with felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana. The possession of a controlled substance charge was later withdrawn at the magisterial district judge level. The remaining charges were dismissed as part of the plea.

Selfridge's attorney, Public Defender Kimberly Hudak, informed the court that Selfridge was pleading specifically to the manufacture portion of the statute.

He was charged after state police said he was growing marijuana at his home in Fairview township.

A “knock and talk” investigation led troopers with the police vice unit to Selfridge's Butternut Road home on April 29, 2015. He let troopers into his house, police said, which smelled of marijuana.

A consent search subsequently turned up five marijuana plants, each about 2 feet tall, in a back bedroom that was being used as a suspected grow room, according to court documents.

Police said they found in the bathroom several items “associated with the manufacturing of marijuana” and on the kitchen counter a small amount of marijuana as well as marijuana pipes and rolling paper.

Following arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance.
