CRANBERRY TWP — A new committee aims to further investigate the impact development has on the environment.

Township supervisors Thursday created of an ad hoc Environmental Advisory Committee. The idea was presented earlier this year by residents attending public hearings for Planned Residential Developments. Many of those speaking against approval of those developments cited concerns over deforestation and the disturbance of nature and wildlife in their neighborhoods.

The ad hoc committee will review the potential role that an environmental advisory committee would play in future development. According to township Manager Jerry Andree, the committee would be selected in June, with a recommendation made to supervisors by the end of January 2020.

Supervisors Mike Manipole, Bruce Mazzoni and John Skorupan voted to approve creation of the committee, with supervisors Dick Hadley and Bruce Hezlep absent.

After approving the ad hoc committee Thursday, Manipole said the board and staff are excited to work with residents on the matter. He said growth and consideration for the environment can work hand-in-hand.

“We always try to bring in as much expertise when we look at different areas and different projects we have going on,” he said. “We believe this group is essential to what we do.”

Supervisors also met in executive session before Thursday's meeting to discuss personnel matters.
