MIDDLESEX TWP — An equipment malfunction caused Twinbrook Animal Clinic to evacuate Friday morning.

A staff member was operating an X-ray machine when some part of the machine broke or came loose, authorities at the scene said. A small amount of a hot liquid, most likely a hydraulic fluid or oil, spilled onto the worker's arm, according to the clinic's director. Medics examined her and found that no harm was done.

The director, Katy Wozniak, said they exited the building quickly after the incident when a technician in the area announced that a foul odor was spreading from the location and filling the office. Wozniak said they immediately launched into their emergency protocols. They turned off equipment, such as oxygen machines, and had the seven humans and six animals inside the clinic outdoors within five minutes.

“Everyone's safety was my main concern, so we worked quickly,” Wozniak said.

Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Company, Middlesex Township Police and Butler County Hazmat responded to the call. Hazmat members determined that the substance was not radioactive or otherwise dangerous.

Friday was surgery day at the clinic, but no animals were undergoing an operation. Wozniak said they were preparing for surgery when the incident occurred.
