Knights handle Bridgers

Balanced offense secures 34-6 win

AMBRIDGE — Two teams headed in different directions met Friday night as undefeated Knoch defeated winless Ambridge, 34-6, on the road.

Senior running back Matt Goodlin scored the first two touchdowns for the Knights, totaling 92 yards on 11 carries.

“Matty, he's a workhorse,” said Knoch coach Brandon Mowry. “He wants the ball and he's our heart and soul on offense.”

The Knights (5-0) led 20-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Knoch quarterback Kam Grassi added to the lead with a 2-yard touchdown run and a 20-yard scoring pass to Scott Fraser.

“The thing that is impressive about Knoch is they play hard and they play fast,” Ambridge coach Don Phillips said. “With all their running backs, receivers, they get after people with their assignments.”

The Bridgers (0-5) would get their only score late in the third quarter on a Deyvon Gill-Martin 11-yard run, but at that point the game was out of reach.

“Those kids from Ambridge came out,” said Mowry. “They weren't going to roll over because Knoch was coming to town. My hats off to those guys.”

The Knights ran the ball a total of 50 times from just five players, totaling 320 yards on the ground.

“(Ambridge) knows this offense,” Mowry said. “The best defense to use is a 4-3 and we told the kids, don't be surprised if they come out in a different set, which they did.”

Knoch's style of offense is something coach Mowry and Phillips are all too familiar with.

Mowry and Phillips have a coaching connection with Frank Whalen, a former coach at Geneva where Phillips was a quarterbacks coach.

Phillips said coach Whalen used the same offense when he was at Geneva.

“I could probably go over there and call that offense,” Phillips said. “I'm sure they use the same kind of terminology.”

A slew of injuries plagued Knoch Friday night, including senior running back James Johnston, who left the game early in the third quarter with a serious ankle injury.

“Jimmy looks like he might have dislocated his ankle,” Mowry said. “We'll know more later, so we'll go from there.”

The Knights will move on to play Montour (1-4) next week at home, looking for their sixth consecutive win.

“(Montour) always plays us tough,” Mowry said. “We gotta get ready to go and it's going to be a hard fought battle. We just gotta be ready to go.”
