Scholarship honors fire service member
CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company on Wednesday announced a scholarship to honor a longtime fire service member.
The Thomas S. Hodder Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to one active fire company member, was created in remembrance of Hodder, a 48-year first-responder who died in September 2020.
During his 48 years, Hodder served as an emergency medical technician and vice commander for the now-defunct Cranberry Volunteer Ambulance Corps. In his later years, Hodder volunteered for the fire police, a group of volunteers granted special powers to control traffic and crowds at the request of fire companies.
The Cranberry fire department said Hodder “selflessly served his community and exemplified the definition of volunteering.”
One Cranberry fire service member who exemplifies Hodder’s qualities — “dedication to the community through volunteering within the CTVFC and, ideally, other outside organizations” — will be selected for the $1,000 annual scholarship. Hodder’s family, including Kim Cannon, his daughter, will select the recipient.
