Nearhoof reaches 1,000 points

Owen Nearhoof became the sixth player in Mars boys basketball history to reach 1,000 career points as the Planets dispatched Valley 74-47 Friday night.

Nearhoof needed four points to reach the milestone and did it in the first quarter with a pair of 3-pointers as Mars jumped out to a 22-11 lead.

Nearhoof finished with 21 points and now has 1,017 in his career.

John Castello added 15 points for Mars (8-5, 5-1).

Freshman Alazia Greaves was charged with the task of guarding Cranberry standout Emily Merryman and held her to a mere seven points as the Warriors routed the Berries 50-30 for their fifth-straight win.

Merryman came into the game averaging 29.7 points per game.

Stephanie McCall scored 18 points and also had 18 rebounds for Moniteau (9-4).

Emily Rider also had 18 points and 10 boards.
