The Freeport School Board last week voted to spend $300,000 to increase security throughout the school district, but specifics are in short supply.

Superintendent Ian Magness said Tuesday that he is hesitant to discuss the specific safety measures planned by the district due to security reasons.

He did say some measures are already in place or under way in the district.

“Safety is always a focus for us here, so we are also looking to do better at narrowing gaps,” Magness said.

Many of the measures have been discussed for some time, Magness said, meaning the expenditure did not result directly from recent school shootings.

“The investment turned out to be timely, but we were already looking at safety,” he said.

Regarding existing safety features, Magness said the district has captured entrances at main doors, a school police officer is stationed in every school and other measures.

“I applaud the board for their support and awareness in making these improvements on an ongoing basis,” Magness said.

The money is in the capital reserve fund.
