51st class announced for county HOF

The 51st induction class into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame has been announced.

Mike Sheehy, Nick Russin, Sam Bello, Meghan Schnur, Darin Cunningham, Gary Warman, Steve Prokopchak and the 1957 Lyndora School men’s gymnastics team will be inducted at this year’s HOF banquet. The dinner is slated for 6 p.m. April 23 at the Butler Days Inn.

Tickets are $30 in advance — $35 at the door — and can be ordered online at bcshof.com. Ticket outlets include Parker’s Appliance in Chicora, Saxonburg Drug, Moses Jewelers, Snack n’ Pack and Bill’s Beer Barn in Butler.

Here is a capsule look at this year’s inductees:

Mike SheehyA 1985 Mars graduate, he played baseball, basketball and football for the Planets, being named team MVP of each sport his senior year. He also received the Eythe Williams Award as Outstanding Senior Athlete.Sheehy played baseball at Penn State and set the Nittany Lions’ record for most home runs hit by a freshman. He was drafted in the 14th round by the California Angels and left Penn State after his sophomore year.Sheehy went on to a storied baseball career in the Eagle County League and was named league MVP four times.

Nick RussinA 1939 Butler graduate, he went on to play baseball at Washington & Jefferson College and UCLA. He tied the college strikeout record and won the Pacific Coast College championship with UCLA in 1944.Russin went on to baseball for numerous area teams, including Highfield in the Eagle County League, East Butler, the Butler Cubs and Saxonburg. He played semi-pro baseball in Tennessee.

Sam BelloA polio survivor as a youth, Bello walked with a severe limp, but became a longtime youth sports coach and mentor in Butler.He served as athletic manager for the Butler Cubs football team, and helped maintain the long-term success of the Butler Area Midget Football League. He coached the Institute Hill Mustangs for many years and coached Center Township.Bello served as BAMFL president and was instrumental in the construction of the Alf Allum Field locker room.

Meghan SchnurA 2003 Butler graduate, she was a standout soccer player for Butler, the University of Connecticut and SkyBlue FC in the Women’s Pro Soccer League. She was also part of medal-winning teams for the U.S, U-19 and U-23 women’s soccer squads.Schnur was a first team All-WPIAL player and helped Butler reach the state championship game. She was named Big East Midfielder of the Year in college.Schnur currently works as a physical therapist in Littleton, Colo., and coaches U-17 and U-12 girls soccer Cup teams.

Darin CunninghamA 1995 Knoch graduate, Cunningham was a three-year letterman in baseball there and was two-time winner of the Ace Pitching Award at Knoch.He pitched the first shutout in Knoch history and went on to receive the John S. Egli Award as the outstanding male athlete at Penn State-Beaver. He was a three-time Butler County American Legion All-Star.Cunningham pitched for the semi-pro Yankees in the Boca Raton (Fla.) league and for the Travelers in the NCAA Collegiate League in Nashville, Tenn.

Gary WarmanA 1978 Mars graduate, he participated in football and track for the Planets and was named Mars Quarterback Club Player of the Week five times in 1978.Warman became a Golden Gloves boxing champion in 1978 as well. A football player at Geneva College, he ranks No. 2 all-time with 429 career tackles for the Golden Tornadoes.

Steve ProkopchakA 1952 Butler graduate, he played golf, basketball and football for the Golden Tornado and proved to be versatile. He played guard, forward and center in basketball, offensive end, defensive back and place-kicker in football.Prokopchak played baseball in the Eagle County and Tri-County leagues and was offered a Class B contract by the Cincinnati Reds. He led the Butler YMCA basketball team to a second-place finish in the national tournament.Prokopchak received nine athletic letters in college at Westminster and served as captain of the golf, baseball and basketball teams there.

Lyndora gymnasticsFrom 1957-62, the Lyndora School men’s gymnastics team won six consecutive Western Pennsylvania championships and more than 60 individual titles.Paul Uram coached the team. Gymnasts included Jim Curzi, Bill Erdos, Earl Hackett, Dave Johnson, Chuck Moses, Gary Sadlak, Pat Daniels, John Franchuk, George Jankovich, Roy McCann, Ken Musko, Ricky Smith, Bill Daubenspeck, Pat Gomick, Bill Johnson, Bud Monteleone, Rich Okeson and Tom Warton.
