BUFFALO TWP — Volunteer firefighters and medical employees of nonprofit ambulance services could receive a couple hundred extra bucks in their paychecks next year.

The township supervisors are expected to approve a measure at their Wednesday meeting to approve an earned income tax credit for those volunteers, emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

Township solicitor Larry Lutz said on Thursday the township has two volunteer fire departments, Sarver and Buffalo Township, and some residents likely work for the Saxonburg or Freeport ambulance services.

“It's to encourage participation in the fire department and EMS services,” Lutz said.

The eligible emergency responders would fill out a form and submit it to the township to receive the tax credit, Lutz said.

He said the loss of tax revenue will be negligible, should the supervisors approve the plan.

“Everyone thinks it's great,” Lutz said. “It's a good program and a good deal for everyone.”

Supervisor Gary Risch said the supervisors respect and admire the volunteer firefighters in the municipality, as well as the ambulance workers.

“They do a lot for us and spend a lot of time away from their families and we appreciate it,” Risch said. “We want to do what we can to help them out.”
