Music is planned for Saturdays in June at the Butler City Farmers Market, 205 S. Chestnut St.

On June 9, Utah Burgess will perform from 10 a.m. to noon. Nash Leslie is scheduled June 16.

The market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and has 10-11 vendors.

The market is managed by Butler Downtown and proceeds are used to fund the entertainment.

“This year, we seem to have a lot of organic vendors,” said Bob Dandoy, community chairman for the market.

He said that vendors change through the season according to when their produce comes in. For example, Pennsylvania premium potatoes are popular, but show up in August when they harvest, Dandoy said. The market is open until October.

“We have a lot of stuff down there,” he said. “Some prepared foods, Greek foods.”

The market is also currently featuring meat, eggs, cheese, vinegar and oil, tea and coffee, household supplies and plants.

An Early American Day will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 at the Old Stone House, 2865 William Flynn Highway, Slippery Rock.

The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Old Stone House, will include crafts, games and food.

[naviga:h3]Memorial Mutt Strut conducted at park[/naviga:h3]

The first Memorial Mutt Strut in memory of Garrett Fifield will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 9 at the Butler Memorial Park Miller Shelter, 100 Memorial Drive.

The strut will consist of a two-mile route as well as various raffle items and light refreshments, to celebrate and contribute to Garrett’s motto for life, which was to practice true compassion for all animals.

Funds raised will benefit the Butler County Humane Society.

[naviga:h3]EDCO Park has free swim day[/naviga:h3]

EVANS CITY — EDCO Park is hosting a free swim day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the park in Evans City.

The event was brought to the borough by those who donated to help the park and pool improvement projects.

Attendees can swim for no charge but those who would like to donate will be given the chance, said John Rogers, park board president.

[naviga:h3]Real estate tax deadline nears[/naviga:h3]

Residents and business owners in Butler, Callery, Connoquenessing, Valencia and West Sunbury have until June 30 to pay their county real estate taxes without a penalty.

Diane Marburger, county treasurer, said the taxes can be paid in person from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at her office on the first floor of the county government center, 124 W. Diamond St.

Marburger said taxes can also be paid by mail or online by visiting www.co.butler.pa.us and clicking on “pay taxes.”

Mailed tax payments must be postmarked by June 30 and mailed to Diane Marburger, PO Box 1208, Butler, Pa. 16003.

[naviga:h3]Harmony awards paving contracts[/naviga:h3]

The Harmony Borough Council voted Tuesday to award the contracts to pave Pittsburgh Street to Shield Asphalt Paving and Barbish Contracting after an extended discussion on the merits of paving the street rather than focusing on potholes.

The borough will pay Shields Asphalt Paving $52,603 and Barbish $15,850. It will also pay $7,691 for underdrain supplies.

Don Sims, council vice president, listed the bids and recommended council go ahead with the plan to pave.

Sims said Pittsburgh Street has needed work for a long time and is deteriorating.

“This is the best attempt to get the biggest bang for your buck,” he said.

The council voted to approve the contracts 6 to 1, with council member Dave Szakelyhidi voting no.
