BC3 to host responders' open house

Butler County Community College will host an open house Dec. 18 for its emergency medical technician and emergency medical responder certification training programs that begin in January, and for its advanced emergency medical technician course that starts in midspring.

Guests can tour classrooms and view equipment used in BC3’s Emergency Medical Services program, which is accredited by the state Department of Health’s Bureau of EMS, and meet instructors from 1 to 9 p.m. in Room 110 of the Science and Technology Building on the main campus in Butler Township.

A 184-hour EMT program scheduled from Jan. 7 to May 13 will provide basic training in all aspects of emergency medical care that an EMT is permitted to provide in Pennsylvania. Classes will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on some Saturdays. A hybrid version of the program, which offers online instruction and four mandatory weekend lab sessions on BC3’s main campus, begins Jan. 10.

A 68-hour EMR program set Jan. 17 to May 9 will provide entry-level emergency training in those aspects of emergency medical care that an EMR is permitted to provide. Classes are scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursdays.

Registration for each certification training program is open until Jan. 4. The EMT program costs $700, while the EMR program costs $350. Students who successfully complete BC3’s training programs must take psychomotor and cognitive exams through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to obtain certification.

BC3 is also planning a midspring advanced EMT program for EMTs whose Pennsylvania certifications are current and in good standing.
