Mars’ Hailey Long, North Catholic’s Jack Steineman have big days at Red, White & Blue Classic | Highlights & scores
Mars’ Hailey Long claimed silver in the girls Class 3A race in 18:01, trailing only a dominant performance from Peters Township’s Kathryn Froelich (17:06.8) in Saturday’s Red, White & Blue Classic at White Oak Park.
Long’s run was the best Butler County performance of the weekend. Teammate Norah Sondej (28th, 19:35.9) was the second local finisher in girls 3A.
In 2A, North Catholic’s Maggie Killian led the local contingent with a fifth-place finish in 20:00.6. Five other Trojanettes finished in the Top 50, with Anna Morris (ninth, 20:19.3) and Nora Narwold (11th, 20:25.1) leading that group. Knoch’s Natalie Zolinas (34th, 21:55.7) and Freeport’s Elizabeth Wesolosky (42nd, 22:26.7) also finished Top 50.
North Catholic’s Jack Steineman followed his HOKA Showcase victory at the start of the season with a fourth-place finish in the 2A boys race, running a 15:54.1. Three other Trojans finished inside the Top 50, with Colton Ginsburg (15th, 17:06.6) leading that trio. Freeport’s David Kristine (sixth, 16:47.2) and John Hart (13th, 17:01.1) were among the top local runners in the boys 2A race. Knoch’s Carter French (seventh, 16:50) and Connor McCool (10th, 16:54.8) placed high, as well.
Mars’ Evan Lewis (26th, 16:43) and Seneca Valley’s Ian Wahl (42nd, 17:08.4) led the Butler County field in boys 3A.
Slippery Rock at Big Red Invitational — Freshman Sophia Gearhart led a strong trio of Rockets girls runners with a third-place finish (20:18) as the girls came in third with 75 points. Hickory won the invite, with Cranberry Area edging out SR by three points. Sophomores Lydia Springirth (fifth, 20:33) and Hannah Love (10th, 21:09) gave the Rockets two more in the Top 10.
On the boys side, Zachary Geisner crossed the line in 18:15 for 16th to lead SR, which finished eighth. Hickory won the boys’ team title.
Karns City’s Noah Weiland led local boys runners with a seventh-place finish in 17:18. The Gremlins did not field a complete team. KC’s Megan Hartle finished 28th in 22:41 in the girls race.
Freeport’s Liam Dunn knocked in the game-winning goal to beat Butler 1-0 in WPIAL non-section action. Xavier Dewitt had the assist, and Judah Thompson didn’t allow a goal for the Yellowjackets.
Slippery Rock 9, Corry 1 — Wade Freehling found the back of the net four times and recorded an assist in the Rockets’ blowout win. Logan Berry had two goals, and Liam Miller, Logan Schulz and Connor Metheney had the others. Schulz also had an assist.
Springdale 2, Knoch — The Knights lost a weather-shortened contest that was called off six minutes into the second half.
Lucia Leyland scored a pair of goals, and Dakota Schnur provided another in Butler’s 3-1 win over Greater Latrobe. Teagan Early and Avery Singer had assists for the Golden Tornado.
