Giesler nets 44 points to help Rockets top Brashear

Slippery Rock High's Brian Giesler found himself in the middle of two games Wednesday night.

The junior guard-forward and his teammates were battling Brashear in the C.J. Betters Holiday Basketball Tournament at the Community College of Beaver County's Golden Dome.

At the same time, Giesler was in a personal duel with the Bulls' Henri Chatman.

Giesler won that contest, outscoring Brashear's senior 44-36, helping the Rockets take a 91-86 decision in a wild overtime fray.

Giesler hit a free throw with seven seconds left in regulation that tied the score at 75 before draining five of six from the line in the extra period.

"Brian was scoring in every quarter and he did a good job of mixing it up," said Slippery Rock coach Phil Bushre. "He was hitting jumpshots, he had four 3-pointers and made plays inside as well.

"He took what the defense gave him."

Giesler's 44 points were the single-game high at the tournament and his total of 69 points in two games was more than any other player. He was an obvious all-tournament selection.

Ryan Gordon had a strong game for the Rockets (4-2), scoring 21 points.

Brashear's Todd Brown scored 23 points, including nine 3-pointers.

At the two-day Brockway Tournament that ended Tuesday, Butler finished second out of 13 teams with 370Z\x points, four points behind champion Clearfield.Saegertown finished third (366), followed by Mercer (261Z\x) and Penn Cambria (253Z\x).Cole Baxter (171) won all seven of his bouts to improve his record to 13-0. No wrestler has recorded an offensive point on Baxter so far this season. Mike Crawford (145) also won his weight division, winning all six matches.Eric Tuck (140), Matt Pribis (160) and Blake Caudill (103) all reached the finals, with Tuck going 5-1 and Pribis 6-1.Mike Scialabba was pinned in the semifinals, but he came back to place third at 189 and improve his record to 14-1. Chris White (5-3) placed fourth at 215.In all, Butler had 10 of its 14 wrestlers place in the top five.
