Slippery Rock girls fall, 44-23

Villa Maria Academy’s defense was too much for Slippery Rock High School in a 44-23 loss in the District 10 AAA quarterfinals Saturday at Edinboro University.

Jenna Whitmer led the Rockets (12-10) with eight points.

Track and field

Seneca Valley’s Michael Kolor won the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Indoor Championship in the mile run Saturday at Edinboro University.

Butler placed seventh out of 34 teams at the event. Kalynn Callihan finished second in the shotput with a throw of 37-5 1/2, while Emily Horstman finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 60 meter dash.

Other Golden Tornado place-winners included: the 2,00 relay (Erin Lemay, Emma Lemay, Paige Lambermont and Michaela Brydon), fifth; 800 relay (Hanna Sheaffer, Madison Tonini, Shana Hoy and Savannah Miller), sixth; distance medley relay (Erin Lemay, Kelly Kabay, Madison Tonini and Michaela Brydon), sixth; 1,600 relay (Alyssa DiPippa, Kabay, Hoy and Horstman), eighth.

The Butler boys placed third in a field of 64 teams. Derek Gengler hit the Pennsylvania State standard for the fourth straight meet and placed second in the shot put.

The Golden Tornado’s 3,200 meter relay team of Josh Rader, Patrick Fullerton, Brandon Critchlow and Adam Knauer ran their best time of the season and placed second.

Bowling

Eight Butler County girls and four boys have qualified for the WPIBL Western Regional bowling tournament, slated March 13 at North Versailles Bowl.

The girls are Butler’s Megan Paul, MiKayla White, Baylee Verner, Nicole Nebel and Abby Bagley, Mars’ Allison Bruce and Karlee Arendt, and Seneca Valley’s Haley Hardcastle. The boys are Butler’s Matt Wetzel, Shawn Marcellus and Dan Bellis along with Knoch’s Joel Zacherl.

Butler’s boys will compete in the WPIBL team championships Wednesday at New Great Valley Lanes in North Versailles. The girls compete at Sim’s Lanes in Beaver Falls on Thursday.
