Police have 'persons of interest' in field vandalism

State police say headway is being made in the investigation of vandalism earlier this month at soccer fields at the Prospect Boys and Girls Club in Franklin Township.

“There are a couple of leads we're following up on,” according to Trooper Philip Treadway, who is investigating the incident.

He said that “persons of interest” have been identified.

The investigation began April 12 when officials for the Prospect Soccer Club discovered that vandals had driven a vehicle over three soccer fields at the facility on Country Club Road, tearing up the grass and leaving ruts.

Police believe the vandalism happened April 11 or 12. Treadway estimated the damage at between $1,000 and $1,500.

Shane Galino, soccer club president, described the damage as taking up the length and width of three fields. He said the tracks in the field indicated that the unknown vehicle entered onto the field from the far end of the parking lot near the pavilion.

Afterward, it looked like the vehicle left at the opposite end of the third field near the bleachers.

Social media posts, including by the Butler Eagle, have generated tips that police have used in the investigation, Treadway said.

While a canvass of the neighborhood found no one who saw or heard anything suspicious at the time of the vandalism, it was helpful nonetheless.

“We obtained a decent amount of surveillance video” from property owners, Treadway noted. He said police are currently reviewing that video for any clues.

The trooper said he has not spoken to the “persons of interest” but he hopes to soon.

Galino said that about 80 boys and girls had registered for the spring season. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, the season remains on hold. Normally the beginning of April marks the start of practice.

It was not immediately known when the repair work would begin.
