BUTLER TWP — As far as Troy Mohney is concerned, he has the best of both worlds.

Family and soccer.

The former steered him into the latter. Mohney enjoyed the sport as a son and loves it even more as a father.

“Coaching my sons at Butler means more to me than anything I ever did as a player,” Mohney said. “To have the family that I do and to be able to make a living in the sport I love ... I feel truly blessed.”

Mohney's exploits as a soccer player and coach at Butler are landing him in the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame. He will be inducted at the organization's annual banquet at 6 p.m. April 13 at the Butler Days Inn.

“It's a tremendous honor,” Mohney said of his upcoming induction. “I was fortunate enough to be inducted into my high school Hall of Fame a few years ago, now this.

“It will be an opportunity to thank so many people in my life. I'm looking forward to that.”

A 1995 Butler graduate, Mohney scored 63 goals in his Golden Tornado soccer career. That's a school record that stands today, as does his single-season record of 36 goals scored during his junior season.

Mohney holds the Butler scoring marks despite playing defense during his first two high school seasons.

“I scored two goals my freshman year and two more my sophomore season,” he said. “Then they moved me to forward.”

Mohney played on some quality teams at Butler. The Golden Tornado lost in the WPIAL semifinals his sophomore year. They went 19-0-1 his junior year — tying North Allegheny on artificial turf — before losing to Mt. Lebanon on penalty kicks in the WPIAL semifinals at NA.

Butler won its section title again in Mohney's senior season, losing on penalty kicks in the WPIAL quarterfinals.

“Hardly anybody played on artificial turf back then,” Mohney said. “We weren't used to it. The game was much faster.”

Mohney went on to play soccer at Saint Francis University, where he became an All-Northeast Conference player while leading the Red Flash in goals and points.

“I played for the Saint Francis coach in ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer, so I got to know that program,” he said.

Mohney has been the boys soccer coach at Butler High School for 14 years. He is also boys director of Northern Steel select soccer and owns the Family Sports Center.

“I bought the facility in January of 2017, but have been working there for 15 years,” he said. “Soccer has been such a big part of my life. I've always been passionate about it, since I started playing as a little kid.”

Two of his sons — senior Tate and freshman Landon — played his Butler High School team last fall. Tate took a run at his father's school record, but fell short.

Mohney's youngest son, Blaine, played soccer for Butler Junior High last year. He will be in eighth grade next year.

His wife, the former Christine Duerring, played girls soccer at Butler and went on to Geneva College.

“We're definitely a soccer family,” Mohney said. “My wife and I both went to Butler and knew of each other, but we didn't meet until after high school. My best friend went to Geneva and we wound up reconnecting that way.”

Mohney got into soccer by watching his older brother play in Texas.

“He was five years older than me and I went to all of his games,” he said. “I started playing, too. When we moved to Butler, the youth program was just getting started. I had an advantage since I had already started playing.

“My mom and dad both coached me at some point when I was young. Soccer was always part of my family then and it still is.”

Tickets for the banquet are $40 in advance and are available at Moses Jewelers at the Clearview Mall, Butler Radio Network on Pillow St., Parker Appliance in Chicora, Snack n Pack in Butler and Saxonburg Drug. Tickets will be $45 at the door.
