Cranberry police partner with app

Cranberry Township’s residents can help keep their community safe with just a few taps on their smart phones.

A new partnership between the Cranberry Township Police Department and the makers of Ring doorbell is designed to help the community stay informed about safety incidents and share information with the police.

Neighbors Public Safety Service allows public safety agencies to join and use Neighbors, a free app by Ring, to share information with residents and request assistance. Residents can also share information with the department.

“With the app, we’ll be able to ask our community for tips and information, and receive pertinent information in real time,” said Lt. William Ahlgren, the department’s community relations officer. “We hope the community embraces this opportunity to assist us in keeping Cranberry safe for everyone.”

Public safety agencies do not have access to user cameras, live streams or personal information when using the app. Police can only view videos and other information if it has been publicly posted on the app or shared. Addresses and identities are not shared, making for a secure exchange of information.

The Neighbors App is free on iOS, Android and FireOS devices. Residents do not need to own a Ring device or any home security system to participate.
